Dr. Gary Kaplan is the founder and medical director of the Kaplan Center for Integrative Medicine and author of two books, Total Recovery: A Revolutionary New Approach to Breaking the Cycle of Pain and Depression (Rodale, 2014) and Why You Are Still Sick, How Infections Can Break Your Immune System & How You Can Recover (Callanan Publishers, 2022). He is also currently a clinical associate professor in the department of Community and Family Medicine at Georgetown University School of Medicine and is a fellow of the American Board of Medical Acupuncture.

A pioneer and leader in the field of integrative medicine, Dr. Kaplan is one of only 19 physicians in the country to be board-certified in both family medicine and pain medicine. He studied and practiced osteopathic manipulative medicine, regenerative medicine and emergency medicine, and is certified by The American College for Advancement in Medicine in the practice of Chelation Therapy. Dr. Kaplan graduated from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa and in acupuncture at the UCLA School of Medicine Extension.

In 2013, Dr. Kaplan was appointed by U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS), Kathleen Sebelius, to the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Advisory Committee (CFSAC), where he served until 2017. Dr. Kaplan also worked with the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to establish acupuncture as a medically effective treatment for a range of chronic pain problems. He trained many physicians in medical acupuncture through the Helms Institute for Medical Acupuncture, sponsored by the UCLA School of Medicine, helped create the American Academy of Acupuncture (AAMA), served as president of the Medical Acupuncture Research Foundation (MARF), and has written and lectured extensively on acupuncture and the integration of complementary and alternative therapies in the treatment of pain and chronic illness.

Dr. Kaplan established the Kaplan Center to provide patients suffering with chronic pain and illness both conventional and alternative medical, customized approaches that have been proven to be highly effective, especially for those with complex and long-lasting problems. In 2015, he established the Foundation for Total Recovery to facilitate research and education around immune-mediated neuroinflammatory diseases to improve diagnostics, treatment and ultimately a cure for the millions of people that suffer from them.

Dr. Kaplan’s work has been featured in TIME magazine, The Wall Street Journal, Fox News, ABC’s Good Morning America, CNN News, BBC, US News and World Report, and NPR’s Diane Rehm Show. He has also written for MindBodyGreen and has appeared in dozens of podcasts. Washingtonian Magazine listed Dr. Kaplan as one of the “Best Doctors in the Washington, DC Area,” and he has received the distinction of being a top rated physician in the Northern Virginia area by Consumer’s Checkbook.
